Finally figured out why my butt joints kept cracking near windows

Been hanging board for about 6 years and every winter I'd get callbacks on butt joints within 3 feet of a window. Last month I did a remodel over in Clackamas and the homeowner pointed out the studs were flexing when the wind hit the glass. I always just screwed the ends tight but never added any blocking between the window frame and the next stud. Now I throw in a 2x4 block on both sides before I hang the sheet, zero cracks since. Anybody else run into this or do you just use flexible caulk and hope for the best?

Zero cracks since" sounds about right. It's like that thing where people fix the symptom instead of the cause, whether it's drywall or a squeaky door hinge. Most folks just grab the caulk and move on, but actually stiffening the weak spot is the real fix. Good on you for spotting it.
