Rant: That fancy vortex pump was a complete waste of money
Four months back I dropped $3,200 on a vortex pump from a rep who swore it'd double my output on a tight channel job near Baton Rouge. First week it worked fine, then the impeller housing started warping from silt buildup. Called the manufacturer and they blamed the material in my cut, said I should've bought their heavy duty model for $5,000. Spent two weekends pulling it apart and cleaning it just to keep moving. Finally swapped back to my old centrifugal pump that I got used for $800 and it's running smooth again. Never again falling for the flashy new gear hype. Has anyone else had a sales guy oversell a piece of equipment that just didn't hold up?

Wait, wasn't a vortex pump supposed to handle slurry better than a standard centrifugal?

Hang on, most people forget about the impeller clearance on those vortex pumps. The gap between the impeller and the casing is way bigger than a standard centrifugal, so it lets larger solids pass through without clogging. But that same gap also makes them terrible at handling thick, heavy slurry because the pump can't build up enough velocity to keep everything moving. You'll end up with settled solids just sitting in the bottom of the volute if the mixture is too dense. So really, vortex pumps are only better for stringy or soft solids, not the gritty, heavy stuff people usually call slurry.
