The apprentice asked why I still use a scale ruler
New kid in the shop, maybe 22, watched me mark out a stair detail on vellum and asked if I had the software on my phone. I told him I do, but I like the physical check before I commit it to the computer. He was quiet for a minute, then said the old guys on his last job all drew on their tablets and made mistakes they had to redo on site twice. That got me thinking about how much I trust the feel of a sharp pencil vs a stylus. Anyone else find the old way catches errors the screen hides, or am I just set in my ways with 30 years of habit?

Standing over a board with a real pencil slows me down in a good way. The screen makes everything look clean and done, but the paper shows me where things get messy before they cost me time. I caught a bad riser height once just because I could feel the line go crooked when I drew it. The younger guys call it a crutch, but I call it a second set of eyes that never needs a charge. They can keep their stylus, I will keep catching my own mistakes before the concrete guy does.
