Dropped $40 on a specialized phone tripod mount for filming my band's practices.
It was a total waste because the clamp design is flawed and can't hold the weight steady. The video still shakes like crazy. Anyone have a solid mount they actually trust for a heavy phone case?

That $40 sting is real... I had the same thing happen with a cheap mount from a big box store. Amy's point about the tripod legs is good, you should check that, but some clamps just can't handle the weight no matter what. I ended up getting one with a solid metal grip instead of plastic, it was a bit more but it actually works. The shaking ruins the whole video, makes it pointless to even film.

You mentioned the clamp design being flawed, but I've had the opposite experience. My band uses a similar mount and it works fine, even with a bulky case. The trick is to really tighten it down hard, more than you'd think. Sometimes the shaking comes from the tripod legs not being solid, not the phone clamp itself. Maybe check if your tripod is sturdy enough before writing off the mount.

Wait, you're recommending tightening it down "hard, more than you'd think"? That's terrifying! I had a clamp snap clean in half doing exactly that, plastic pieces went flying everywhere. Almost took my phone with it, barely caught it before it hit the ground. The whole point of a phone mount is to hold it securely without having to risk breaking the plastic. And seriously, it shouldn't take that much force to get a basic function to work right. If the design needs you to crank it down like a car lug nut, that's a design flaw, not a feature. Glad it's working for your band, but I'm not trying to test my luck every time I set up for a video.
