I used to hate using a chalk line for laying tile - now it's my go-to trick
For years I would just start tiling from a corner and eyeball the layout as I went. Last summer I redid my kitchen floor in a 10x12 room and ended up with a 2 inch gap at the far wall because I got off square. My neighbor who does tile work saw my mess and showed me how to snap a reference line down the center of the room first. Now I always pop that first chalk line and it keeps everything straight even when my measuring is off. Has anyone else had a tile layout disaster that taught you a better way?

Start with your eyeball method and you'll get good at squaring things up on the fly without needing extra tools.

You ever notice how most disasters in life come from skipping the boring prep work? It's like cooking a big meal and forgetting to chop everything first, then you're scrambling while the pans are smoking. Same with painting a room - you think you can skip taping the edges and it'll look fine, but then you're spending twice as long fixing drips. My whole approach to pretty much anything changed when I learned that the boring setup is what separates a mess from something you're actually proud of. That chalk line is just a reminder that taking five minutes to think ahead saves you five hours of regret later.
