Woke up to black mold behind my bathroom mirror, do not skip the vent fan

Three years back I rented a place in Phoenix and the bathroom had no fan, just a tiny window. I showered daily and thought nothing of it until last month the mirror frame started looking dark behind the edges. Pulled it off and there was a nasty patch of mold spreading down the drywall, about the size of a dinner plate. Landlord had to cut out 2 feet of wall and replace it, cost him like $800 but the bigger issue is I probably breathed that stuff in for weeks. Any of you dealt with hidden mold behind fixtures, and how did you catch it before it got that bad?

Man, I pulled a mirror off once and found a whole family of silverfish behind it, mold's got nothing on those little creepers.
