My attempt to fix a leaky pipe turned into a basement flood
Last Saturday I decided to finally patch a small drip under the kitchen sink. Figured it was just a loose connection, so I grabbed my wrench and gave it a twist. That pipe cracked wide open and sprayed water everywhere for a good 10 minutes before I found the main shutoff. Ended up calling a plumber who charged me $250 and laughed the whole time. Has anyone else had a quick fix turn into a total disaster like that?

Honestly, a $250 service call doesn't sound like a total disaster to me. That's basically the price of a plumber showing up and fixing something, even if it was a simple leak in the first place. I've had "quick fixes" turn into a weekend of me crawling under the house with a headlamp, buying three different parts from Home Depot, and still having to call a guy. Your story ends with a clean fix and a laugh - your mileage may vary, but that sounds like a win to me, not a flood of biblical proportions.

Man I bet that plumber still tells that story at parties about the guy who tried to fix a drip and created a swimming pool. At least you got a good story out of it and didn't have to replace the whole ceiling from a leak above.
