My sister's surprise visit last year made me realize something about this lifestyle
Honestly, back when I had a home base, family just showed up. Tbh, now with time zones and visas, it takes real planning. Ngl, I kinda miss the spontaneity.

My friend Mark was living in Chiang Mai when his brother tried to surprise him. He flew all the way from Denver, but Mark was actually on a visa run in Kuala Lumpur for the weekend. His brother had to get a hotel for three nights alone before Mark could get back. The whole thing just ended up being stressful and really expensive for both of them. It showed how the rules change when your address isn't permanent.

When I was living overseas, my family tried to surprise me with a visit. They nearly bought plane tickets without knowing I had a visa run scheduled. I started sharing my online calendar with them so they could see my travel plans. This simple step prevented expensive mistakes and awkward hotel stays. We learned that open communication about schedules is key. Now, all visits are planned with clear dates and backup options.

Surprises are still possible, they just look different now. You can meet someone halfway in a new city instead of them coming to your door. It keeps the fun but works with the reality of moving around.
