When a friend called my digital art an ad

I posted my digital artwork online. A buddy called it an ad. How do you stop your work from blending in?

Yeah, when someone calls your art an ad, that's rough. My own stuff sometimes looks like it's selling a stock photo smile or a background for a bank website. I have to catch myself using the same three safe colors over and over. Gotta throw in a weird shape or a messed up texture just to break the corporate vibe.
