Finally figured out why my digital art showcase pages kept bouncing viewers

For months I put my portfolio pieces on a plain white background with a tiny caption and wondered why people scrolled past in like 2 seconds. Last week I pulled up my site analytics and saw the average time on page was 11 seconds. Then I studied a friend's page who gets tons of comments, and the difference hit me. She showed her sketch layers, a rough draft, and the finished piece side by side, plus a short line about what she changed between each step. I reworked my top 3 pieces over the weekend with that same before and after setup, and now my bounce rate dropped from 78% to 51%. I think viewers want to see the process, not just the polished result, it makes the art feel real instead of magic. Has anyone else tried showing their revision layers and seen better engagement, or do you stick to final images only?

Wait, 78% to 51% just by adding sketches and a few words? That's a huge jump. I mean, I believe you, but it's wild that showing the messy middle instead of just the clean finish makes that big of a difference. Honestly I've always been scared to show my rough drafts because they look terrible, but maybe that's the point. People want to see you struggle a bit, like it makes the final piece more impressive. I'm gonna test this on my next post, even if it feels like showing my homework.
