Ran into a guy at the parts counter who set me straight on injector cups

Old diesel tech named Mike at the Cummins dealer told me to stop using the puller and just freeze my injector cups before installation. Tried it on a 5.9 job last Saturday and they slid right in with zero hassle. Anyone else tried the freezer trick or still swear by the tool?

Man I wish I had learned that trick years ago. I spent way too many Saturdays cussing at stuck injector cups with that puller feeling like I was gonna break something expensive. Mike sounds like the kind of old timer who knows more than any book. Freezer method just makes sense when you think about it metal contracts and the cup shrinks enough to drop right in without fighting it. I've done it on two 6.7 jobs now and it worked perfect both times no leaks no drama. Just make sure you clean the bore real good first or you'll still have trouble. I'll take that over the puller any day.

You gotta make sure those cups are bone dry before you drop them in the freezer too. If there's any moisture on them they'll freeze into a little ice layer and mess with the fit. I leave mine in a ziploc bag overnight, pull em out right before install, and they go in smooth as butter on a hot biscuit. Takes all the guesswork out of it.
