Got locked out of my own shop for 2 hours after a key broke off in the deadbolt
The locksmith quoted me $180 to drill it out and replace the cylinder, but I found out the landlord keeps a spare key in the building office, so I got in for free and now I'm wondering if every Detroit commercial property has this same basic security hole?

Think about this from the landlord's side too. That spare key is a huge risk if someone steals it or copies it, and then they have access to every unit in the building. You got lucky this time, but a $180 fix is cheaper than a break-in or a lawsuit. Maybe the real hole is that the landlord trusted the office staff with a master key in the first place.
