A warning about city permit fees for small renovations

I just got the final bill for a small office facade update in Corktown, and the permit fees alone hit $1,850. I was only budgeting around $800 based on an old guide from the city website. It seems the fee structure changed last fall and they're enforcing it more strictly now. Has anyone else run into this with a commercial project in the last few months?

That's actually pretty normal for commercial work now. The city's been clear about the new fee schedule for a while, so it's on us to check the current rules before we budget. Not really a surprise if you do your homework first.
