My daughter asked me why I still call my old boss every Sunday, and I didn't have a good answer until now
My first plumbing boss, Ray, is 78 now and I still call him every Sunday morning around 8. Been doing it for 12 years straight, even after I started my own shop with three guys. Last month I asked my 14 year old daughter to hand me my phone while I was under a sink, and she saw the contact just says Ray with a little wrench emoji. She goes, why do you still call some old guy every week, you don't even work for him. I told her it's just something I do and kind of dropped it. But it made me think about why. When I was 22 and had been on my own for maybe six months, I flooded the bottom floor of a dental office in Council Bluffs because I crossed two lines on a repipe and didn't check my work. Ray drove 40 minutes on a Saturday, helped me shop vac for three hours, and never once called me an idiot in front of the dentist. He just said, you'll check twice from now on, won't you. He also told the dentist it was his fault for not training me right, which was a lie. So now I want to hear from you guys. What's something a mentor or old boss said to you that you still carry around years later? I'm curious if it's usually the big lessons or the small stuff like that.
