Had to choose between a stable desk job or chasing carpentry work. Picked the wood.

Last spring I had a solid offer doing data entry for $42k a year with benefits. But I've been building custom shelves and tables on weekends for 2 years and actually love it. Turned down the desk gig, took a pay cut to $28k starting at a cabinet shop. 6 months in and I'm learning more than I ever did in 4 years of office work. My hands hurt every day but I don't dread waking up. Has anyone else made a leap like that and regretted it or not?

Read a study recently that said most people who switch to blue collar work report way higher satisfaction despite lower pay. Your hands hurting sounds rough but the whole not dreading mornings part is huge. Sounds like you made the right call chasing what actually makes you feel alive.

Remembered the exact feeling when I hung up my tie for good. My grandfather had this beat up workbench in his garage, all gouged up and stained, and I used to watch him fix stuff on it when I was a kid. Took me about ten years and two different office jobs to finally understand why he always smelled like sawdust and never complained about going to work. Now I keep a little jar of his old screws and nails in my shop, just to remind myself that some things are worth the calluses. Funny how a pile of rusty hardware can tell you more about what matters than any paycheck ever could. Your hands will toughen up, trust me, but that feeling of building something real with them sticks with you forever.
