PSA: I thought those 'free VPN' ads were just trying to sell me something, but my cousin in Seattle got his bank info stolen using one.

He downloaded a popular free VPN app last month to watch a show, and a week later saw weird charges from another state. Honestly, the app was logging his traffic and someone got his login details. Has anyone found a trustworthy free option, or is paying the only safe way?

@viola_butler that's a good question. And to be honest the phrase "nothing is truly free online" is pretty much hitting the nail on the head, because even paid services can get sloppy if they're not vetted.

Which specific VPN app was it?

It's the same with those free photo editing apps, maybe nothing is truly free online anymore.
