Debate: Simple home router vs. a $300 security gateway for a family of 5?

I spent 6 hours last Sunday trying to lock down my kid's iPad after it snagged some phishing link, and my TP-Link router just couldn't block it at the DNS level. Would a proper firewall box have saved me that time, or is overkill for normal households?

Funny you mention the DNS level thing because I used to be the guy who thought a basic router was good enough for everyone. Then my neighbor showed me his old Netgate box and I watched it shut down a sketchy redirect my kid clicked on before it even loaded. Changed my whole perspective. That being said, you don't need to drop $300 to get that protection. A used Protectli or even a Raspberry Pi running Pi-hole can do the same thing for way less and save you those weekend headaches.

Did you try just setting up a Pi-hole for like 40 bucks?
