Refund policy at that local hardware store near downtown used to be a handshake
I took back a paint sprayer I bought 14 months ago, the thing was making a weird noise, and the kid at the counter just gave me store credit no questions asked. A few years back the same place would have made me dig up the receipt and call the manager over for a 10 minute talk. When did customer service get so loose with the rules or did I just get lucky?

You totally nailed it @joel_young, I bet that's exactly what happened. I had the same thing happen last summer with a cordless drill I bought from a big box store 18 months prior, thing just stopped holding a charge. Walked in, told the guy at the returns desk, and he handed me a full gift card without even blinking. My husband was standing right there and we both looked at each other like, did that just happen? Makes you wonder if these places are just trying to beat Amazon at their own game now or if they finally realized loyalty pays off better than fighting over a 30 day window.

right? that drill thing happened to my cousin too and she was shocked they just took it back no questions asked. @joel_young must be onto something with those system updates, feels like these stores are finally wising up.

Actually, 14 months is a lot more than the 12 month return window they used to have posted by the register. They probably just updated their system to match the big box stores.
