The old friction rig beat the new hydraulic on a tight job in Tulsa
I spent last week running a 150 ton hydraulic on a tight steel set, and the setup time drove me nuts with the counterweight swings. My foreman pulled our old American friction crane out of the shed, and it just walked through the same picks with way less fuss. Anyone else find the older gear easier on tight sites, or is it just me being stuck in my ways?

Man, I read a piece in a trade mag a while back about how those old friction rigs have way fewer moving parts to fail, and that simplicity really shows on a cramped layout. Plus the older machines just have that slower, more deliberate feel that lets you finesse a load into a tight spot without all the electronic babysitting. I get the nostalgia thing, but honestly, sometimes the old stuff just plain works better when the ground is muddy and the angles are brutal.
