Realized I was holding my shears wrong after 5 years when a client asked why my cuts were always uneven.
Took a workshop in Portland last spring where the instructor pointed out my thumb was pulling instead of gliding, and now I wonder how many bad haircuts I could have avoided.

The thing about thumb pulling, that's what I did for almost three years with my first pair of shears. My mentor at the time finally grabbed my hand mid cut and showed me how my thumb was basically fighting the motion instead of just letting the shears do the work. She had me practice on wet paper strips for like an hour before she'd let me near a head again.
