The ex-cop at the truck stop was right about my CB antenna, damn it

Three weeks ago outside of Flagstaff, this retired officer who ran a mobile radio shop told me my antenna was grounded too close to the cab. I laughed it off because I get solid range in flat states. Then last Monday in Ohio, my signal dropped out mid-conversation with a dispatcher about a load delay, and I almost missed a reroute that cost me 200 bucks. That same weekend I checked the mount, and sure enough, it was touching the bracket. Has anyone else ignored a random stranger's technical advice and paid for it later?

Man, that hits close to home. We all do it, we see some old timer with his little radio setup and figure we know better because our gear works most of the time. Then it bites you right in the wallet, which is the only way some of us learn. I had a similar thing with a tire guy once, he told me my pressure was off by a few pounds and I shrugged it off, then blew a steer on a downgrade. The cheap lesson is always harder to take than the free advice, thats for sure.
