Appreciation post: that old guy who showed me how to finish a slab in Tucson

Back when I was just starting out I met this old timer named Ray at a job site in Tucson. He saw me struggling with a bull float and walked over and said "you're pushing too hard, let the concrete do the work." He spent maybe 20 minutes showing me the right pace and how to read the surface. Has anyone else had a random person give them advice that still sticks with you years later?

Hey did that old timer happen to charge you for the lesson or just give you the "tuition in concrete" for free? I swear every good tip I ever got came from some crusty dude who smelled like dust and coffee, never from a manual. I still remember a random plumber yelling at me on a jobsite about how "primer ain't perfume, you gotta drown the pipe in it." Really makes you wonder how many things we all do wrong for years before some stranger sets us straight, huh?

Ha! Yeah that primer quote is GOLD. I'd rather get yelled at by a guy who smells like gas station burritos than read a 200 page manual any day. At least the yelling comes with free real world advice.
