Vent: I finally matched my bench's cable stash to the actual job tickets after 9 months
Nine months ago I started tracking every loose cable I pulled from dead machines in a spreadsheet, mostly to prove to myself I wasn't just hoarding junk. Last Friday the count hit 400, and it turned out 312 of them went back out on real repairs, which saved my shop in Roseville about $2,300 in parts we didn't have to order. Does anyone else keep a running log like this, or am I the only one who tabulates old cables?
There was a post on a repair sub a while back where a guy did the same thing with laptop chargers and ended up saving his team a few grand over a year. Tracking this stuff seems boring until you see the numbers add up, and your 312 out of 400 hit rate is pretty solid. Your mileage may vary by shop, but a simple log like that seems worth the five minutes a day.
