PSA: watch the surge protectors at that county office building downtown

I was doing a network drop install at the old county records annex on 5th street last Tuesday and every single outlet strip in their server closet was a cheap power strip, not a real surge protector. One had a burn mark on the casing and the breaker was tripping under load. I flagged it to the facilities guy and he said they've never replaced them since 2019. Has anyone else run into this at municipal sites, and what do you use to convince them to spend the $40 on actual protection?

wait, 2019? they have been running cheap power strips in a server closet for five years and nobody caught it until now? that is insane. one burn mark on the casing should have been the wake up call.
