Had a weird week where every fix seemed to create two new problems

This Tuesday, a client brought in a gaming PC from a house with three cats (you can guess where this is going). I cleaned the dust out, but then the CPU started overheating because the old thermal paste was shot. Replaced that, and then the system wouldn't post because I must have jostled a RAM stick. Got it running, only for the client to call back saying their second monitor wasn't working, which turned out to be a driver issue from a Windows update they'd paused months ago. It felt like playing tech support whack-a-mole for about 48 hours straight. Anyone else have a week where simple jobs just keep unraveling?

Sounds like a standard troubleshooting chain to me. Each step just revealed the next actual problem that was already there. That's not things unraveling, it's just proper diagnosis.

Do you think that kind of chain reaction happens more with older systems? I see what @schmidt.grace means about it being a proper diagnosis, but it still feels like you're just finding new ways for the machine to fight back. Makes a quick clean-up turn into a whole project.

Honestly, I just started charging by the hour for those jobs.
