A customer pointed out my thermal paste application was wrong and it saved me a return trip

Was doing a CPU swap on a gaming rig last Tuesday, put the paste on in a pea sized dot like always. Customer was watching me work and said "my last guy did a cross pattern and my temps were way better." I shrugged it off but looked it up later. Turns out for AM5 sockets the spread pattern matters more than I thought. Redid it with an X pattern and sure enough his idle temp dropped 8 degrees. Now I ask what socket they're using before I even open the paste. Anyone else had a customer teach you something you should have known?

Switching to a thin spread with a spatula made a huge difference for my own rig.

Tried the spatula method once and ended up with more spread on my shirt than on the bread. My kitchen skills are a real hot mess sometimes, pun totally intended. But seriously, switching to a thinner layer made a world of difference for me too, kept the whole structure way more stable. Ever get so focused on even coating that you forget the spatula is just a fancy butter knife?
