I thought that $600 dive light was a total waste, then a midnight job in Puget Sound changed my mind
Last year I was working a pier rehab job in Seattle and the foreman said we needed to do a night inspection on the pilings before the next morning's pour. I had always used the cheap handheld lights that come with the hat, maybe $80 tops, and I figured a fancy $600 can light was just something sales guys push on new divers. The first night I clipped on the borrowed light and dropped down about 30 feet, and I could actually see the whole weld seam on the H-pile, not just a little yellow spot. Normally at night I am basically feeling my way around with gloves, checking for cracks by touch, which is slow and honestly kind of sketch. With that light I finished the inspection in about 25 minutes instead of the 90 I usually budget, and I spotted a gouge the size of a dime that I would have missed with the cheap lamp. Next morning the engineer looked at the photos and flagged that one spot for a re-weld, so it paid for itself in one shift. Now I want to know if anyone here has run the cheaper knockoff versions that claim the same lumens and how they held up after a few months of saltwater.
