Rant: My buddy Dave swore Earth X would fix my Marvel burnout

I've been reading the same 616 stuff for years and was getting bored. Dave kept telling me to try Earth X, said it was the best alternate Marvel story ever. I finally picked up the trade last month and he was dead wrong. The art is muddy and the plot makes no sense unless you've read every X-Men comic from the 80s. Has anyone else had a friend recommend a so-called 'hidden gem' that was just a mess?

My cousin swore by X-Tinction Agenda and I fell asleep twice reading it.

The whole "Infinity Gauntlet" thing overshadows it, but X-Tinction Agenda actually started the trend of big mutant crossovers that Marvel still does today. Before that, X-Men events were mostly self-contained within their own books. It's funny how people either love it or find it a total slog, no middle ground. The Genosha setting was interesting but the execution felt rushed, like they were just throwing every mutant at the wall to see what stuck.
