My brother in law called me out on my comic gatekeeping

I was at a family BBQ last weekend and my brother in law mentioned he got into comics through the Marvel Zombies series. I almost rolled my eyes and said something about it not being "real" comics. But he kept talking about how much he loved the art and the story and I realized I was being a total snob for no reason. He reads comics now, that's awesome, who cares where he started? Has anyone else had to check themselves for being too picky about what counts as a "real" comic?

Caught myself doing the same thing a few years back when a coworker got into comics through The Walking Dead. I was all set to be that guy about how Kirkman ripped off Romero until I realized I was just being a gatekeeping jerk for no good reason. Now I've actually gone back and read some of the Marvel Zombies stuff and honestly, it's got some killer art and a fun twist on the zombie genre. Your brother in law is into comics, that's what matters. We all start somewhere, and acting like there's a "right" way to get into this hobby just pushes people away.

Wait, you actually went back and read Marvel Zombies? I had that exact reaction when my nephew tried to get me into it a few years ago. Figured it was just a cheap gimmick, like throwing zombie makeup on superheroes and calling it a day. But then I picked up the first trade paperback just to prove him wrong, and that Arthur Suydam cover art is something else. The way they handled Spider-Man in that series still sticks with me, honestly. It's a weirdly clever take that works better than it has any right to.
