Debate: should comic book fans gatekeep rare variants or share them with everyone?

I brought a rare ASM 300 variant to a local con last Saturday and got yelled at for showing it off by one guy while another dude thanked me for letting him hold it, so what do you think the right move is when you own something valuable?

A similar situation happened to me a few years back with a Detective Comics #27 facsimile I had signed by a big name artist. One collector got loud about how I was just trying to show off, but another guy asked really politely if he could just look at the signature close up. That second encounter taught me something - I started keeping the book in a simple top loader without a flashy display stand. If someone asks to see it, I'll hand it over but I make sure they know I'd appreciate them being careful. Usually works out fine.

Kept my signed book in a plain sleeve too, totally changed how people approached me about it.
