The moment I stopped using a French press at 5am

I was in my kitchen at 5:30am last Tuesday, half asleep, and I poured boiling water straight into my French press and smashed the plunger too fast. The whole thing exploded coffee grounds all over my counter and my white shirt. I stood there in the dark with coffee dripping down the cabinets and realized I needed a simpler morning setup. Switched to a pour-over cone and it's way less messy when I'm not awake yet. Has anyone else had a coffee disaster because you just didn't have your brain on yet?

Ease up on the pour over too though man. I switched from a French press to a pour over and ended up burning my hand on the hot glass decanter because I grabbed it without a towel at like 5 in the morning. The real trick is just accepting you're gonna screw up something simple before coffee hits your system. Buy yourself a travel mug with a lid and a filter basket so you can just dump grounds and water in it and seal it up. No glass to break, no hot water waiting to splash you. I finally gave up on fancy setups entirely and just use a basic drip machine with a timer. Set it the night before and wake up to a full pot already made.

Wait, aren't you supposed to let the coffee steep for a few minutes before you press down on it? You probably had a lot of pressure built up from pouring water straight in and smashing it right away, that sounds like a recipe for disaster. A pour over is definitely a smarter move for a half-asleep morning routine though.
