Figured out why my French press coffee always tasted like mud, and it was one dumb thing
Tbh I was grinding my beans way too fine for 2 months straight because I used the same setting as my drip machine, and a barista at this spot in Portland finally asked what I was brewing with. Switched to a coarse grind and the same beans taste totally different now, anyone else make this mistake starting out?
I mean, is this really some huge revelation though? Grind size is like the first thing anyone tells you when you get into coffee, it's on every bag and every basic guide. Two months of mud coffee sounds less like a mystery and more like you just never looked it up. A barista asking what you're brewing with is pretty normal small talk too, not some magic moment. Don't get me wrong, coarse grind for French press is right, but calling it one dumb thing kind of undersells that you probably would've caught it way sooner with five minutes of reading. Same beans tasting different is just how extraction works, finer grind means more surface area and over-extraction, which gives you that bitter muddy thing. Glad it clicked for you but this is more like a rite of passage than a hidden secret.
