Warning: my neighbor's yard sale made me rethink everything I own
I was helping my neighbor with her yard sale in Portland last Saturday, and we filled three entire trucks with stuff nobody wanted. She looked at the pile and said, 'All this just to end up here.' It hit me that every single thing I buy will eventually become waste, using up resources and energy. Now I'm trying to only buy what I really need. How do you guys fight the urge to buy new stuff?

Ugh, that's such a real feeling.

That line about "all this just to end up here" is a total gut punch. I had the same moment cleaning out my parents' garage. You see a lifetime of stuff that was once important just sitting there waiting to be trash. Now I make myself wait 48 hours before buying anything that isn't food or a basic need. It really cuts down on the random junk I bring home. The feeling of having less stuff is actually way better than the quick buzz of buying it.

Right? That 48 hour rule is a game changer. It really makes you see what you actually need.
