Overheard someone say heat pumps struggle in old houses - is that true?
I was at a hardware store in Buffalo last weekend and heard a guy telling his friend that heat pumps don't work well in homes built before 1950. My house is from 1927 and I've been thinking about switching from oil heat to something greener. Has anyone here actually put a heat pump in an older house and seen good results in the winter?

Roll your eyes and join the club, I guess. My house is from 1928 and I've had a heat pump for two winters now. Works fine down to about 10 degrees, after that the backup kicks in and my electric bill gets a little spicy. But honestly, the old oil furnace was way more expensive to run anyway, so even with the backup heat it's still cheaper. Just make sure you get someone who actually knows what they're doing with older homes, cause the first guy I called took one look at my plaster walls and said it was impossible.
