A friend pointed out that my AC unit was leaking refrigerant into the air

Last summer a guy I know who works in HVAC came over and said he could smell something off from my window unit. He showed me where the coolant was slowly leaking out. I had no idea that old units can leak stuff that hurts the ozone. I replaced it with a newer energy efficient model that uses something safer. Has anyone else had an old AC or fridge that needed to be swapped out for climate reasons?

Yeah that stuff is no joke. Old units can be real bad for the environment.

@hollym82 You ever wonder why nobody talks about how much copper and steel is in those old units? That stuff takes forever to break down in a landfill. Plus the refrigerants are straight up bad news if they leak. It's a real problem nobody wants to deal with because recycling is a pain. We're basically just kicking the can down the road for the next generation.
