A customer in Boise asked me to clean his gas fireplace flue last week.

He said his old guy always did it, but I had to explain there's no creosote buildup like a wood burner. This happened a few times last month too. Are more folks just mixing up the maintenance needs for different fireplace types?

Yeah, the "old guy" probably just took the money and ran with it. Sounds like people are just used to one type of fireplace and assume they all work the same. How much did that guy charge for a pointless cleaning, anyway?

Bet he charged a full service rate for a basic look over. People trust experience so much they don't question the actual work done. Makes you wonder how often that happens with other home services.

Honestly, that old guy saw a modern fireplace and probably thought he hit the jackpot. Tbh, it's like @clark.claire said, people just see gray hair and assume they're getting real service. He charged for a full clean on something that basically cleans itself. Ngl, the guy might as well have charged for wiping dust off a light bulb. Makes you wonder what other simple jobs he turns into a full paycheck.
