My nephew showed me I was using my old Lincoln Logs wrong for 30 years
He connected them sideways to make walls instead of just stacking them on top of each other. I always thought they were boring as a kid but now I see I just never built anything interesting with them. Anyone else find out way later they were using a toy the wrong way?

Did you see that thing online where people found out you can make log cabins with them standing up? I heard it on a podcast and it blew my mind too.

The old Scandinavian method called "stave construction" used vertical logs with mortise and tenon joints, it's been around since the 11th century. Those churches in Norway that are still standing show how well it works when done right. The main difference is the logs need to be squared off and fitted tighter since water can pool at the top if you don't slope the roof correctly. It actually uses less wood than horizontal log cabins because you don't need as much overlap on the corners. People think it's new but it's really just an old trick that got rediscovered.
