The self-checkout scale has a very specific zone and people keep missing it

I watched a guy try to scan a bag of oranges three times at the Kroger on Maple Street because he kept putting them in the wrong spot. The scale only works if you put the item in the bagging area, not just near it. Anyone else see this happen a lot?

Maybe the design is just bad. If so many people get it wrong, the machine should be easier to use.

You're right about that specific zone, it's way too picky. I saw the same thing last week with a woman trying to buy a single lemon. She had to call the attendant over twice because the machine kept yelling about unexpected items. @schmidt.eva has a point about the design being bad. If the scale needs such exact placement, maybe they should paint a bright yellow box where things actually go. It feels like they built these for robots, not for regular people with full carts.
