My card got declined at the Kroger on Vine St and the guy behind me bought my $3.87 gum
So last Tuesday I'm standing in line at the Kroger on Vine St with like three things, gum, a Gatorade, and some bananas, and I swipe my card and it just beeps at me. Beeps again. The screen says SEE CASHIER. I'm standing there digging through my purse for another card like an idiot and my face is getting hot because there's like 6 people behind me. The cashier, Denise, she was super nice about it but I could feel everyone staring at my back. Then the guy behind me, older dude in a Bengals hat, just taps his card on the reader and says "don't worry about it, I got it." I tried to hand him cash and he literally waved me off and walked out. It was $3.87. I stood there in the parking lot for a second just kinda stunned. Anyway I went back the next day hoping to catch him and pay it forward but no luck. Has anyone else had a total stranger bail them out at checkout like that? What did you even say back, cause I feel like I said nothing useful.
Honestly that whole thing sounds so sweet it kinda made my day just reading it. The card decline panic is the worst feeling, especially with a line of people behind you, so having someone just quietly fix it without making it weird is a big deal. The fact that you went back the next day to try and find him says a lot about you too, most people would just shrug it off. With the Bengals hat and the wave off, that guy probably didn't want a whole thing made of it, so saying almost nothing was probably exactly right. If it were me I'd just try to do the same for someone else down the line, that's really all you can do at this point lol.
