My boss sent us to install carpet in a room with no door
Got a job order to do a bedroom, but when we got there, the wall framing wasn't done yet. We had to roll out the carpet right next to where the door would go, which felt pretty silly. The home owner just laughed and said he wanted the floor done before the walls went up. We finished it, but stepping over the two by fours all day was a workout.

Usually carpet goes in after drywall and paint are done. Doing it first risks getting it dirty or torn up during construction. What was the homeowner's reason for that order?

But is it really that big of a deal? Carpet is pretty easy to clean or just cover up, and getting it in first can help protect the subfloor. Feels like people worry about that stuff way more than needed.

Honestly have you seen what trade guys track through a house? Drywall dust gets everywhere and sinks into carpet fibers no matter how much you cover it. Paint splatters would soak right in and stain for good. Even if you cover it with plastic, seams tear and stuff slides underneath. Protecting the subfloor sounds nice until you're replacing brand new carpet because it got wrecked.
