I just read that a single 2x4 can hold over 600 pounds straight down
I was looking up load tables for a deck I'm building in my garage last night. The chart said a standard 8-foot SPF 2x4 on edge can support about 650 pounds before it fails. I always figured they were strong, but that number really surprised me. It makes you think differently about how much weight those little studs in your walls are actually holding up. Has anyone else had a moment where a basic material's strength caught them off guard?

Yeah, it's wild when you realize how much hidden strength is in ordinary stuff. I had the same feeling learning how strong a sheet of plywood is when you lay it flat across joists. Or those little metal brackets holding up shelves. We build our whole world on these simple bits and just trust they'll hold, and most of the time they do. It's kind of comforting in a way.

Ever wonder what else we trust without thinking?
