Fixing a door that wouldn't latch right took me a whole afternoon

Had a simple job to adjust a door that was sticking. Figured it was just the hinges, so I shimmed them out. That didn't work, so I started planing the edge. After an hour of that, I finally checked the strike plate with a square... the mortise was cut at a slight angle, maybe 2 degrees off. Had to chisel it out square and reset the plate. What do you guys do when a simple fix turns into a geometry puzzle?

That "simple job" is always a trap.

Spent a whole weekend once trying to level a wobbly table. Kept trimming the legs. Turned out the floor itself was a solid inch off. You chase the obvious thing and the real problem is hiding in plain sight.
