The day my manager told me my report was 'too thorough' and I finally got it

I spent 3 days perfecting a market analysis for my boss last Tuesday. She told me nobody reads past page 2 and that's when I realized I was writing for my own satisfaction instead of actually helping the team. Has anyone else had to unlearn over-researching to just get the work done?

The same thing happens with streaming shows now. I used to watch every single episode of a series start to finish, taking notes and following every little detail. Then I realized most people just have it on in the background while they scroll their phone. They catch the main plot points and that's enough. Over-researching or over-watching is just a way to feel productive when the real goal is to move forward. Have you found a way to tell the difference between thorough and too thorough?

But isn't watching something closely the whole point of being a fan, not just a consumer?
