Ran into my old college professor at the coffee shop and he told me I should stop chasing titles and start chasing skills that make people need me.
He said five years from now nobody cares if you were a senior director at a company that went under, but they will call you if you're the person who can fix a broken supply chain or write code that actually ships, and honestly that hit different cause I've been stuck thinking about my next promotion for months, has anyone else had a mentor totally flip how you see your career?

Can't believe he actually said that out loud in a meeting. I would've just stared at my shoes if I was in that room. @samthompson, that's the kind of thing you think to yourself but never ever say to anyone, especially not your team. Makes you wonder what else he's been saying that nobody's caught yet.
