Overheard my boss say 'culture fit' and it meant something totally different

I was grabbing coffee near the break room and heard my manager tell HR that someone didn't 'vibe' with the team because they left at 5:01 every day. Turns out 'culture fit' really just means you stay late for no extra pay. Has anyone else realized their office culture is just code for something else?

Ugh that sucks. For me, I ended up just having a real talk with my boss straight up about what they expected from the team. Turned out they had no idea their managers were using "culture fit" that way. Once I called it out like "hey, is the expectation that we stay late or is it okay to leave at 5?" they actually clarified it was fine. Sometimes the code gets passed down from one manager to the next without anyone questioning it. Clear communication cut through the BS pretty fast for me.

Yeah calling it out directly is the only way sometimes. @angela_carter really nailed it with that approach. People get so caught up in the "culture" buzzword but never actually define what it means, so managers just make up their own rules. Asking straight up like "do you want me to stay late or is leaving at 5 fine" forces them to pick a side. Most bosses will panic and backtrack if they realize their "culture fit" nonsense looks bad out loud. It's wild how much of this stuff just floats around without anyone checking if it's even real.
