My salary negotiation hack after 3 weeks of overthinking

I got an offer last May that was 8% below what I wanted, and I spent forever dancing around the number because I was scared of sounding greedy. It took me 3 weeks of back and forth emails, almost losing the offer twice, before I finally just wrote back: "I appreciate the offer, but I need $X to make this work for me, can you get closer to that?" Turns out the recruiter told me later they had room all along, they just wait to see if you ask. The whole process should have taken one email but my fear of rejection stretched it into a month of stress. Has anyone else wasted way too long trying to be coy about numbers instead of just stating them plainly?
