I got passed over for a lead role at my old job in Austin

Three years ago, I was working at a tech startup in Austin and had been there for two years, doing well on my team. When the lead developer spot opened up, I was sure I'd get it because I knew the systems inside out. They gave it to an outside hire from California who had more big company experience, which really threw me. Has anyone else been in that spot and figured out how to bounce back from it?

Did you ever find out what they were really looking for in that role? Sometimes a company wants a specific kind of experience, like managing bigger teams, and it's not about how well you know the current systems. It's a crummy feeling, but figuring that out can help you know what to work on next.
