That cheap tarp finally failed, so I went with a silnylon one instead
Had a $15 blue tarp from the hardware store rip to shreds during a storm at Lake Tahoe last month. A guy at the campsite told me silnylon packs way smaller and doesn't soak up water. Any of you made the switch and regretted it?

Silnylon is great but it definitely still soaks up some water.

Has your friend ever had a bad experience with silnylon in wet weather? My buddy took his silnylon tarp out on a week long trip in the Smokies and by the third day it was noticeably heavier. He said it felt like the fabric had just soaked up enough moisture to add a couple pounds to his pack. He ended up having to hang it out to dry every evening, which was a real pain. So yeah, it's definitely better than plain nylon but it's not totally waterproof like some folks claim.
