PSA: that $80 rain fly saved my trip in Olympic National Park, and I almost left it at home
I bought a cheap $80 rain fly two seasons ago and almost tossed it in the donate pile because the tag said it only fit one tent model. Three weeks ago I camped near the Hoh River and it rained 2 inches overnight, and that fly was the only reason my bag and pad stayed dry. My buddy's $400 tent body soaked through while my franken-setup held fine. Now I'm wondering if I just got lucky with the fit or if rain flies are the most underrated piece of gear out there. Has anyone else had a cheap add-on out-perform their main tent?
How does a rain fly meant for a totally different tent end up fitting better than the actual tent? I feel you on almost donating it too, I've done that with stuff and then kicked myself later when it turned out to be the one thing that held up. The part that gets me is your buddy's $400 tent soaking through while your cheap setup stayed dry, because that tells me the price tag on the tent body says almost nothing about how it handles real rain. Seems like the fly is doing the actual work and the tent body is mostly just there to hold the poles. Two inches overnight at the Hoh is no joke either, that place gets soaked. Glad you kept it around, that would've been the worst thing to leave at home.
