Pro tip: ditch the paper maps for downloaded offline trail apps
I used to print out trail maps and stuff them in a Ziploc bag before every hike. They'd get soaked, torn, or I'd drop them in a creek near the Smokies last fall. Now I just download the AllTrails map to my phone before heading out, and it works even with no signal. Has anyone else found a good backup system when your phone dies halfway through a long day?

Man, it's like everything's going that way now. I noticed it with cookbooks too. Used to have a shelf full of stained pages, now I just pull up a recipe on my phone. But then my buddy's phone died making dinner last week and he was totally lost. Kinda feels like we're trading one kind of problem for another. Paper might get wet but at least it still works when the battery's dead.

What happens when the power grid goes down for a week though?
